Grand master Ji Han Jae from the movie Hapkido which incidentally was meant to promote the system worldwide.

I think Kwai Chan would be able elaborate more on this subject and I think its interesting to know these guys who are today grand masters or one the other hand if they are no longer alive lets pay tribute to them in this thread.

Subject: Hapkido

Hapkido is an extremely effective art. It's actually a blend of Japanese Daito Ryu Aikijutsu and Korean Tae Kyon. The father of the system (Choi Young Sul) created what was then known as Hapkiyoosool. His pupil, Ji Han Jae created his own school (adding kicks/strikes from Tae Kyon) and coined the term Hapkido in 1957. His most notable student is Whang In Sik. Ji Han Jae moved to the States in '84 and fairly recently appeared in the Bruce Lee doc 'A Warrior's Journey'.

In the west, the father of Hapkido is undoubtedly Bong Soo Han who was one of Choi Young Sul's original students. Grand Master Han staged the fights and appeared in 'Billy Jack' (1971) and 'The Trial Of Billy Jack' (1974) with Tom Laughlin. The famous 'park fight' in 'Billy Jack' is a classic display of Hapkido technique. Tom Laughlin has stated that Bruce Lee learned various techniques from Bong Soo Han. He still has a school in Santa Monica. I'd love to train there.

Angela Mao, Sammo Hung, Carter Wong and Jackie Chan went to Korea and trained with Jin Pal Kim (one of Ji Han Jae's chief instructors) and of course they also studied with Ji Han Jae himself.

Subject: Ji Han Jae information

Ji Han Jae hasn't changed much. He certainly has an interesting history. Back in 1967 he went to Vietnam and trained US soldiers in Hapkido.

I find this interesting as the fictional character of Billy Jack is an ex-Green Beret Hapkido expert. Ji first arrived in the US during '69 and taught the US Secret Service, FBI and CIA. It was actually during his time at Andrews Air Force Base that he met Bruce Lee. Jhoon Rhee introduced the two and Bruce Lee reportedly asked Ji to teach him some techniques. I've read that during the filming of 'Game Of Death' Bruce was in some way frustrated by the amount of takes involved in filming the fight between himself and Ji. If this is true then Bruce's attitude would seem a bit cocky given Ji's undoubted skill.

In the late 70s Ji found himself involved in some political intrigue when he started teaching the Korean President's bodyguards. In 1979 President Park Chung Hee was assassinated by Kim Jae Gyu (Ji's student). The assassin was actually the head of the Korean Security Forces. As a result, Ji was unfortunately implicated as he had innocently recommended Kim for the security post. Ji had to serve a year in prison for nothing more than knowing Kim Jae Gyu. It was after this that he moved to the States.
