Actors Biographies and Filmography
Donnie Yen
Biography
Donnie Yen was born in the Chinese province of Caton , Donnie moved with his family to Hong Kong at the age of two and spent many of his formative years there before re-locating, age eleven to Boston in the United States. Donnie's mother Bow Sim-Mark was a world renowned Wu Shu and Tai Chi Master, she began instructing her son in the discipline of the Chinese Martial Arts almost as soon as he could walk. His father Klysler Yen editor of the Boston Sing Tao ( a leading international Chinese daily paper), also encouraged his son to study piano. Consequently Martial Arts and music have fuelled Donnie's passions ever since. As a young teenger growing up in Bostin's Chinatown, the young Donnie would often skip school to hang out at the local theatres watching the movies of his idol Bruce Lee and learning from other Martial Arts movie icons such as Fu Sheng, Ti Lung and the prolific Jackie Chan. Always hungry for knowledge, Donnie would also search out and master as many styles as he could in order to develop a truly effective and electric fighting art. In a curious parrallel with Bruce Lee, Donnie began to get involved with the street gangs which frequent the notorious " Combat Zone" in Boston, forcing his concerned parents to apply on his behalf for a scholarship with the world famous Beijing Wushu Team. Due to his exceptional talent, Yen became the first non-PRC Chinese to be accepted at the school and spent two years training ande studying with the same master as Jet Lee. On his way back to the U.S Donnie made a nostaigic trip to Hong Kong and was introduced to film director Yuen Woo Ping, the action choreographerr for 1999 box office mega hit "The Matrix" . He was famous for launching the career of Jackie Chan with action classics " Snake In The Eagles Shadow" and "Drunken Master", and now he was looking for a new Kung Fu star. In Donnie Yen he had found his man and began a successful collabroation that would last for many years. At the tender age of nineteen, Donnie would make his motion picture debut in the show stopping "Drunken Tai Chi". The movie did not perform particularly well at Hong Kong box office at the time of it's release in 1980. In an ill conceived move to capitalise on the break dancing craze, Donnie Yen and Yuen Woo Ping teamed up again in 1985 to make"Mismatched Couple. Tragically the movie again misfired with the target audience and Donnie had to endure another 4 year sojourn from the bussiness, before moving into his golden period with hard hitting action drama " Tiger Cage" in 1989. This movie for Dickson Poon's D&B films was the first of three excepionally choreographed action advantures, all directed by Yuen Woo Ping . He went on to make several successful films during the 90's and is still making films today
